What is Botox?

By Dr. Peter Accetta

Botox is a purified protein, created synthetically in the controlled conditions of a medical laboratory. The neuromodulator is injected, and it chemically interrupts signals from nerves that tell muscles to tighten. As the underlying structure relaxes, surface skin smooths out, softening etched lines and wrinkles.

Dr. Accetta demonstrates the use of Botox on his patient

Today it can be artfully placed anywhere repeated muscle contractions tend to cause dynamic wrinkles, including:

Horizontal furrows in the forehead

To elevate a heavy brow

“Crow’s feet” – wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes

Fine lines radiating from the lips

“Bunny lines” on the nose

Botox Cosmetic was initially approved for the treatment of “elevens”  vertical glabellar lines between the eyebrows.

Treatment can soften dimpled (a golf ball) chins or relax the upper lip to alleviate a “gummy smile.” An injection session requires no anesthetic, and typically takes only 15 minutes and results last for up to four months.

Treatment Results

Make the faces that make the lines for 1 hour.
