What happens when you see a Dermatologist for the first time? I want to give you an idea of what to expect and what you can do to prepare. You should know that we look at ALL of your skin. Most skin cancers appear on sun exposed areas. However, it can occur in areas where the sun doesn't shine. So, expect us to check those areas too! Don't worry. You won't be hanging out in your birthday suit. We have you keep your under garments on and provide you with a gown or drape to cover up with.

How to prepare:

- Remove all nail polish as skin cancer can hide under nail polish.

- Do not wear make-up. We want to see your skin without any camouflage.

- Don't have a tan. We like your skin to be in it's most natural state so we can determine what is normal and what is not. Plus, we don't like tans anyway.

- Wear loose fitting clothing so that it is easier to change.

- Circle any lesions you may be concerned about with a pen or make a list. This way we can address all of your concerns.

- Tell us about previous sunburns or your history of tanning bed use.

- Bring any products you may be using on your skin.

- Bring an updated medication list and know your medical history.

See you at your appointment!

Our skin cancer screening at the Boulevard Mall this year was a great success!  The event was covered by television channel 4 news and we were able to screen more than 150 people. We were able to identify a number of different skin cancers and counseled people regarding treatment and sun protection.

This years screening was organized by 2 UB medical students.  Molly Cowdrey and Emily Farrell arranged for the space, equipment and free Neutrogena sunscreen samples.  I would also like to recognize the 2 physician assistants from our practice, Susan Peterson and Emily Gottstein for giving a Saturday afternoon back to the community.  Other dermatologist volunteers included Mary Louise Lenahan and Ceaser Guerro and Ruchi Bhandari.  All and all a very "feel good" kind of day.
