It’s not officially winter yet but snowflakes have fallen and it’s certainly cold outside. Dry, itchy winter skin is a common occurrence. Our skin is a barrier that protects us and when skin is dry, that barrier is broken. Dry skin can lead to disorders, such as eczema, or allow bacteria to pass through.

To help protect your skin from dryness you can perform some simple tasks.

The most obvious is moisturizing which should be done daily. The most effective time to moisturize is immediately after a shower or bath. By applying moisturize while your skin is damp it absorbs into the skin better and keeps it more moist. Try to avoid hot showers as they usually lead to loss of moisture

Keep Hydrated by drinking plenty of water. You can also keep a humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep.

Protect you skin from the elements like cold, wind and snow by wearing hats scarves and gloves.

Finally, it’s still important to apply sunscreen to your face in winter. There are still long wave UV rays passing through clouds causing damage. Sunscreen can also protect the skin from the elements and hold in more moisture.
