As reported in the February issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology:

  • Educational videos focusing on premature aging caused by sun exposure were more effective in convincing teens to use sunscreen than videos focused on skin cancer risks.
  • An aged appearance is of more concern to a teen than the risk of skin cancer.
  • Sunscreen use by teens who watched the "appearance" video increased more than those teens who were only shown the video explaining skin cancer risks.

Facts about Indoor Tanning

  • Was first introduced in the United States in 1979
  • An estimated 50,000 indoor tanning centers in the U.S. generate over 5 billion dollars in annual revenue
  • Ten percent of Americans tan indoors and most of them are young white women
  • Users of indoor tanning do so because they believe they look healthier and feel better with a tan, no because they lack knowledge about the dangers
  • Indoor tanning has a positive association with alcohol, tobacco, recreational drug use and eating disorders
  • Young men who tan are more likely to have anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms
  • The World Health Organization has designated tanning devices as known carcinogens, however the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies them as Class 1 medical devices the same as bandages and tongue depressors as reported in the March issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology
