Many people perceive that they look thinner when tanned.  We live in a time when physical appearance is important and many think that being bronze is associated with being healthy which can ce a "weird contradiction."

With the American Cancer Society predicting 77,000 new cases of skin cancer and 9,000 deaths in 2013, we know that skin cancer is the most common malignancy in the United States.  In addition, there is a rapid incline in melanoma rates.

So why do people still sunbathe?  There are three main possibilities according to most physicians.

One:  A brain high is achieved that makes them feel happy.

Two:  A vitamin D issue for strengthening bones.  (Not enough of a benefit to risk skin cancer.)

Three:  An invincible feeling that nothing will happen to me especially among young adults.

Remember the next time you want that tan, some of the statistics and the potential outcomes of being diagnosed with a skin cancer.

If nothing else, think of the aging effects and wrinkling that occur on unprotected skin with sun exposure.

Be sure to check with your physician or pharmacist concerning your medications for photosensitivity - both prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Photosentizing ingredients may cause a rash, itching, swelling and a bad sunburn.

Some types of these products include:

antibiotics

antidepressants

chemotherapeutic agents

diuretics

hormones

NSAIDS

sulfonylureas

tranquilizers.

Be safe and protect your skin.  Always wear sunblock and/or protective clothing.

It's official as reported in the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal it has finally been proven that sunscreen does indeed prevent wrinkles.

I recently went to a conference for the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants. While listening at one of the lectures, the speaker reminded us that front windshields of cars are often polarized. That helps protect against UV rays while driving. However, it is too expensive for car manufacturers to polarize the side windows. This means that you are getting UV exposure to the left side of your face and body while driving. Remember, sun damage is cumulative, so all that driving is UV exposure. Not only are you at higher risk of getting skin cancer but those damaging rays cause premature aging, wrinkling and brown spots on the left side of your face. Don't believe me? Check out this picture I found of a gentleman who has been a truck driver for 28 years! His years of driving has caused significant aging to the left side of his face. Apply your sunblock every morning and you'll fight premature aging while driving!
